Dr. Dearing has received extensive training in the treatment and management of ocular disease, including diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and ocular surface diseases. He is also trained in the fitting and management of specialty contact lenses, pediatric care, and surgical co-management. Dr. Dearing completed multiple externships throughout his education, including a large ophthalmology sub-specialty clinic in Phoenix, AZ, an Indian Health Hospital in Santa Fe, NM, and a private practice in Seattle, WA.
Dr. Dearing is certified by both the Oregon and California Boards of Optometry. He holds certifications in injectable, oral, and topical pharmaceutical agents. He is a member of the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association, American Optometric Association, and Beta-Sigma-Kappa optometric honor society.
During his free time, Kyle and his wife Mallory, along with Bogey their yellow Labrador, love spending time outdoors golfing, hunting, fishing, and visiting with friends and family. His zest for life and love of conversation will make you feel relaxed and like family. Dr. Dearing is excited to be your and your family’s next eye doctor.
Growing up near the Klamath basin in Susanville, CA, Dr. Appel graduated from Lassen High School and underwent training for automotive repair. After several years as an automotive technician he decided to retrain into a more personally fulfilling career. He graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, then obtained his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. After living in Alabama for a short while, he was excited to return to a more familiar climate and be nearer to family.
Dr. Appel offers routine eye exams, ocular disease management, contact lenses, pediatric eye exams, and surgical co-management.
Dr. Appel and his wife and 3 children greatly enjoy many outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, snowshoeing. The Appel family is excited to be involved with such a welcoming and genuine community!
Growing up very nearsighted, Dr. Sparks understands and appreciates the importance of clear vision. Dr. Sparks began her optometry career in Klamath Falls after graduating from Pacific University College of Optometry in 2004. Prior to completing her optometry degree, Dr. Sparks trained in numerous optometric and Lasik co-management practices in the Willamette Valley and Seoul, South Korea. She is also a graduate of Oregon State University.
Dr. Sparks’ scope of practice includes routine vision care, treatment of eye disease, contact lens fitting, Lasik and surgical co-management, and pediatric vision exams.
Growing up in an Army family, Dr. Sparks spent parts of her childhood in Georgia, Oregon, eastern Washington, Alabama and Germany. After all of that travel she is very happy to have settled in the Klamath Basin.
Dr. Sparks practices out of Benson Eye Center and Downtown Optical. She is always happy to accept new patients.
Dr. Tuhy joined Klamath Eye Center in 1999. He previously practiced optometry in Minnesota and his home state of North Dakota following his graduation from Illinois College of Optometry. A second generation optometrist, Dr. Tuhy enjoys his role in improving the quality of his patients’ lives through vision care.
Dr. Tuhy’s practice of primary eye care includes treatment of eye disease, contact lens fitting, Lasik and surgical co-management, as well as routine vision care. In addition to seeing his civilian patients, Dr. Tuhy serves as a member of the Oregon Air National Guard. He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Growing up in the rural Midwest, Dr. Tuhy feels right at home with the hard-working, honest people of the Klamath Basin. He has also developed great peer relationships through his participation in church, music, motorsports and ice hockey.
In addition to his active involvement in the Klamath Falls community, Dr. Tuhy has also led or participated in 13 eye mission trips to Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe.
Dr. Jonathan Fay is pleased to return home to beautiful Klamath Falls to join his father and the Klamath Eye Center in the practice of ophthalmology. His areas of expertise are in cornea and external eye disease including: cataract surgery, cornea transplants, corneal degenerations, infectious diseases, and LASIK. He also provides comprehensive care to patients with diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
After graduating from Klamath Union High School, Dr. Fay attended college at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina where he was recognized for his academic and athletic performance in track and field. He then attended medical school at Oregon Health and Science University and internship at Legacy Health System in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Fay continued his training in ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Medical Center of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He then went on to Columbia University in New York where he received fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery and served as a surgical instructor, teaching cataract surgery to ophthalmology residents.
Dr. Fay brings to Klamath Falls new areas of expertise in ophthalmology and in doing so joins the Klamath Eye Center in offering state of the art care to their patients. However, what he enjoys most about ophthalmology is offering meaningful and personal care to his patients, and what better way to do this than in the community he grew up in!
Outside of medicine Dr. Fay is a husband and father. He enjoys almost any form of exercise and outdoor activity, especially with family and friends.
Dr. Stevens and his wife Cassi moved to Klamath Falls in 2009 after the completion of his ophthalmic residency at West Virginia University. Dr. Stevens also holds a degree in Humanities from Brigham Young University and completed medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine.
As a general ophthalmologist, Dr. Stevens enjoys being able to make an immediate difference in people’s lives through cataract surgery. His interaction with patients is easily his favorite part of practicing at Klamath Eye Center. In addition to cataract surgery Dr. Stevens’ practice also covers eye disease treatment and management, Medical Laser Surgery, as well as comprehensive eye care. His charm, humor and humble approach has endeared him to his patients and co-workers at Klamath Eye Center.
The Stevens family enjoys traveling and a diverse collection of cultural experiences. They also enjoy the many natural wonders of the Klamath Basin and its outdoor activities. Besides Klamath Falls, Dr. Stevens has lived in Utah, Missouri, Arizona, West Virginia, and Brazil.

Dr. Fay’s path to ophthalmology began as a junior high student, when he was hired by an ophthalmologist to do work around the doctor’s home, yard and office.
After earning an undergraduate degree at North Dakota State, he started Medical School at the University of North Dakota. Dr. Fay completed medical school at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He spent the next two years serving the U.S. Public Health Service as a primary care physician, he then returned to the University of California, San Diego completing his residency in ophthalmology.
Loving the sunshine, Dr. Fay and his family settled into Klamath Falls to begin practicing general ophthalmology in 1989.
Outgoing, personable and having a genuine care for people, Dr. Fay’s patients truly appreciate his surgical and medical care. Cataract surgery, Eyelid surgery (medically necessary and cosmetic), strabismus surgery, eye disease treatment and management, medical laser surgery, and routine vision care are all included in the scope of Dr. Fay’s expertise. He has also been treating patients with Botox for medical and cosmetic needs for over 20 years (though he claims to only be 29 years old).
Outside of the office, Dr. Fay enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys outdoor activities and as much exercise as he can get.
